The degradation process can be divided into three stages: biological corrosion, biodegradation and bioassimilation. Biocorrosion is sometimes described as surface-level degradation that alters the mechanical, physical, and chemical properties of materials.
 

If the material is exposed to abiotic factors, biological corrosion will occur, resulting in further degradation of the material structure. These initial changes are influenced by abiotic factors in the presence of environmental (mechanical), light, temperature, and chemical factors.
